Hello everybody! My name is  Dr Liv Kraemer, but all my patients are calling me Dr Liv. I’m a dermatologist with focus on skincare and skinfood. A lot of my patients here in Zurich/Switzerland ask me how to prevent acne. I would like to share with you some common mistakes you can avoid while washing your face. Watch my video tutorial about how to wash your face the right way and read my tips below. If you want to read the blog in German, switch to the German site.

How to wash your face properly or what is a good way to wash it?

  • First of all, wash your face twice a day. Wash it every day!
  • Clean your face with a foam instead of a soap! It has a bigger surface and is therefore very mild.
  • Don’t forget to wash your hands first before you are touching your face. As you want to minimise all bacteria on your face. If you have bacteria on your hands your face will get pimples.
  • Be careful and take your time while washing your face! Don’t hurry!
  • Wash your face with lukewarm water and avoid too hot water.
  • Use a small or midsize towel for your face only! Don’t use it for other parts of your body in order to minimise the bacteria overload.
  • Wash your face towel frequently, e.g. 2-3 a week.
  • Use a white towel so you can see how dirty it is. Change it, if necessary. You want to avoid acne.
  • Wash your towel with 60 Celsius to minimise the bacterial overload.

How long should I wash my face?

  • Generally speaking: It really depends on what ingredients are inside your washing cleanser.
  • If you use salicylic acid or glycol acid you have to slowly increase the washing- and leave-on time.
  • Keep the cleanser on, while brushing your teeth.
  • Use your hands to really massage the cleanser into your face. Massage the cleanser from the nose to the cheeks down to the chin and then to the forehead.
  • Rinse the cleanser with water.
  • Rinse the cleanser well.
  • Then dry your face with a towel. Don’t use cotton balls or tissue. These products are not sterile. Use a towel instead. It is cheaper anyway.

How to wash your face in the morning properly?

  • Wash your hands first after you wake up. Trust me, there are a lot of bacteria on it. Watch my other Video blog about how to avoid acne while sleeping.
  • If you wash your face in the shower, don’t wash it with a shampoo (what most of my male patients unfortunately do). 🙁
  • Wash your face with a cleansing foam instead!
  • Wash your face in front of your sink completely.
  • Rinse your face not with too hot or too cold water. Use lukewarm water.
  • Afterwards, put your cleanser into your clean hands, foam it and then apply it on your face and massage it on.
  • Rinse it off and dry it with a white midsize towel, just used for your face.
  • Afterwards, use a light lotion and a SPF lotion or gel with at least a factor of SPF 30.

How to wash your face at night or before bedtime?

  • Remove your make-up first.
  • Never ever go to bed with make-up. Just imagine how all the bacteria will grow.
  • Don’t wash your face with oil. You will just cover the bacteria under a kind of oil tent. You will get more pimples.
  • But you can remove your make-up with oil.
  • Ideally, remove your make-up with a cleansing milk or even a 3-1 make-up remover towel.
  • After removing the makeup, rinse it with water and apply your cleanser.
  • Always remember: you want to prevent acne.

What happens if you are not washing your face properly?

Your morning routine: Clean your face gently with a cleansing foam and use a moisturizer or lotion afterwards. I recommend using sunscreen with SPF30 every day to protect your skin from harmful UVA rays. In the evening, remove your make-up and wash your face before going to bed! If you don’t, you’re going to rub the bacteria into your pillow. Therefore you get a bad skin condition or cause acne. Hence it is important washing your face the right way!

What is acne and how to prevent acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Yes, acne always existed, even 100 years ago. I would say because of the dirt and the hygienic problems even more intense in the middle ages than now. Hormonal changes and stress trigger acne. You, of course, know it. Just if you have a date or a party, your bacteria make a big party on your face, too: you get a breakout.

Acne most commonly appears on your face, but also on neck, chest, back and shoulders. I know, acne can be distressing and annoyingly persistent. I have a lot of patients in any age. The patient’s age is ranging from 13, with a peak around their late 20s and even up to their mid-30s and 40s. Acne in the 40s is the so-called “late-onset acne”. But don’t be afraid, don’t give up. Try to apply my tips while washing your face. But please remember: There are acne treatment solutions. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. But on the other side don’t over-treat. Don’t try too much, get help by a dermatologist before it’s too late.
